They were there together, at an age when they should not have had to look elsewhere for a future. The unemployment of those who had come before them had taught them how difficult it was to open the door to work.
The days passed with the strange feeling that nothing ever truly began. A few things to do, conversations going round in circles, plans that led nowhere. After so much waiting, even time seemed to have stood still.
They looked around and saw not only poverty, but above all paths closing before they had even been taken.
And so, life elsewhere began to occupy more and more of their conversations. Not because they knew what they would find there, but because life here seemed to promise them nothing more.
One can live with little for a long time. It is harder to live without a horizon.
